Cleaning And Maintaining Your Hardwood Flooring

Few things are as beautiful as a well maintained hardwood floor.  Proper care will help your floor retain its captivating appeal for years to come!

By observing a few precautions and setting up a regular cleaning routine and maintenance program, you can expect years of beauty from your floor.

* The following are examples of the reasonable and necessary maintenance you should to perform.

Cleaning Your Hardwood Flooring

• Use a damp cloth to blot spills and spots as soon as they happen. For tough spots, such as oil, paint, markers, lipstick, ink, tar, or cigarette marks, use acetone/nail polish remover on a clean white cloth, then wipe with a damp cloth. Always avoid allowing liquids to stand on your floor.

• Sweep, dust, or vacuum the floor regularly with the hard floor attachment (not the beater bar) to prevent accumulation of dirt or grit that can scratch or dull the floor finish.

• Occasionally wipe the floor with a damp mop or cloth.

• Periodically clean the floor with products designed specifically for your floor. Your warranty does not cover damage caused by non-recommended products.

While cleaning is easy, there are a few things to avoid:
• Do not use oil based wax, polish, or strong ammoniated or abrasive cleaners.

• Do not use steel wool or scouring powder.

• Do not wash or wet-mop the floor with soap, water, oil-soap detergent, or any other liquid cleaning material. This could cause swelling, warping, delamination, and joint-line separation, and void the warranty.

• Do not use any type of buffing machine.

Other routine care instructions.

• For spots such as candle wax or chewing gum, harden the spot with ice and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper, such as a credit card. Be careful not to scratch the flooring surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

• Cigarette burns - Scrape excess off with dull knife. For shallow surface burns, rub gently with fine steel wool coated lightly with mineral spirits. For deeper burns, scrape away charred areas with a small dull knife. Then rub the surface with fine steel wool and mineral spirits once more. Use the touch-up kit from the manufacturer of your floor to finish the job.

• Food spills, lipstick, rubber scuffs - Simply apply mineral spirits to a clean cloth and rub gently. Apply another dab and lightly buff with a separate clean cloth.

• Minor Cuts, Burns, Gouges - Limit traffic over damaged area, cover with masking tape, contact your manufacturer for advice.

• Ink - Scrape excess off with dull knife. With a clean cloth or paper towel, wipe affected area right away. Then rub gently with a soft clean cloth dampened with mineral spirits.

• Animal spots - Wipe up major portion immediately and thoroughly. Then wipe area with a clean cloth dampened with UltraClean™.

• For tough stains, use a Hard Surfaces Flooring Cleaner (check with us or the manufacturer of your product).

Caution! Mineral spirits are a flammable liquid. Please follow precautions listed on the container. What do your customers have to say? Consider using some space to tell the story of the business through your customers' voices. Their word is more powerful than anything you can say for yourself.
